  1. Dr. John W. L. Martin

    Dear Priyanka Chopra Jonas
You will not know me, down here in Christchurch, New Zealand.
You are a wonderful person, talented actress and a true champion for women’s rights and for equity of ethnic and minority groups.
You rightfully express and stress the need for equal opportunity for these people with respect to education and careers.
I have viewed and have enjoyed many of your interviews on social media. I have found them to be inspirational, positive, respectful and dignified.
I would like to introduce you to my daughter, Professor Philippa Anne Martin.
Philippa is an expert in Communication Engineering, having been elected in the past for three years as a member of the board of governors of the world’s leading society in this field to represent the whole of the Asia and Pacific areas. She was chosen above male applicants from Japan, India, China and Australia.
She is a strong advocate for the need for and value of women across the world in Engineering.
She and her research team are developing theory and technology for 6G Communication and beyond.
She experienced a male-dominated bullying culture within a highly achieving department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Canterbury but she worked hard, persevered and excelled in her performance to become the first female appointed to full professor in her department after a mere 130 years! She was also the youngest of either gender ever to gain this position.
This department had developed a notoriously toxic culture towards female, Maori, Polynesian, foreign and older (over 22 years old) students starting out in Engineering. Social media were being used in a destructive manner to undermine the confidence and credibility of these students.
The young people in our city had lived through a series of frightening, severe earthquakes and aftershocks that had killed hundreds of people and destroyed many buildings. The ground acceleration movements in the city were some of the highest ever recorded throughout the world.
Further stress was imposed upon us all by the Covid-19 pandemic and required isolation. Philippa developed amazing resources for on-line teaching and support of students through this period.
In 2007 the Vice Chancellor of UC created a special dean position for first year Engineering at the university. This appointment was for 2 years and the challenge was to change the culture around to become positive, productive and inclusive for a mere 1000 plus students! Philippa gratefully accepted the challenge on top of all her other demanding roles.
Philippa had come to the conclusion that being a successful, positive female role model was not enough and she decided to take action to change things. Truly a courageous and by many considered impossible task.
Philippa visited the USA, gleaning their ideas and returned to NZ. She communicated with other educators, Sociologists, staff from other faculties and Guidance and Counselling staff as well as expertise from schools from which students were coming. She got input from engineering from the Engineering students at all levels as well as the staff in the department.
She started from scratch to develop a system of mentoring in which students at all levels and staff worked together. Activities were developed to include diverse groups until they realized that incisiveness was improving the quality of their work and results. Students had input on how to meet their needs and courses were changed to maximize achievement.
The academic staff had the courage to be trained and to accept some dramatic changes in methodology and delivery.
The result six years later has produced a nationally recognized model .
Philippa gained 5 major awards for her work in 2023, A national Tertiary teaching award presented in Parliament, Engineering tertiary teaching awards from NZ and Australia and awards with UC. She considered that the awards belonged to hundreds of staff and students that had achieved the wonderful changes.
I have always told my son Greg and Philippa that they could achieve anything and to encourage them to pursue what they loved doing.
When Philippa was 16 she went to La Paz in Bolivia on an AFS exchange for a year instead of doing her final school year in NZ. She arrived there in a Cholera epidemic. She chose to speak no English and forced herself to learn Spanish. She got laughed at a lot and had headaches for a month or so as she learned their language. She did 14 subjects including writing essays on Bolivian history in Spanish and topped the school at the final exams with an 88 per cent average!! She came home saying “I can do anything”
In her first year at UC she took on intermediate courses for both Law and Engineering. She was told that could not be done and told the staff to make her drop one option at the of term one if she was not coping! She completed both with excellent grades but then pursued Engineering.
I recommend for you to search and find on Youtube the following public lecture by Philippa given when she was made a full professor. The University leader told her to give an address on her Engineering research but with the backing of the head of Engineering she gave this amazing and courageous speech on the need for women in Engineering and the bullying they have faced over many years!!
    Search as follows:

UC Connect: Women on the cutting edge of Engineering.

I believe that even you will be encouraged and inspired by a female who is standing up in a field you once dreamed of being in, to further the recognition of women and the give them greater opportunity and respect!!
    Respectfully yours,
    Doctor John W. L. Martin
    PS.
We would be so honored to have you visit New Zealand. Just a hop beyond Australia.
We too have a movie industry with Peter Jackson ( Lord of the Rings etc.)
Aso Jane Campion was one of the first females to gain an Oscar for directing a movie, It would be utterly amazing if you could take on a leading role on one of her movies!

  2. Okay , you would definitely don’t know who I am but I am sitting in my car from during a lunch break to listen to your “UNFINISHED” book. I don’t know why but I started getting bursts of tears when I heard in your own words you won the pageant.
Guess what you are definitely making an impact on me. I am not a fan at all for your movies or you and it is just because I don’t know too much hindi since my mother tongue is Telugu. I came across one of your shorts on youtube and then slowly you started making an impact with your Blast of Positivity and Confidence. Now I hate to say this but you became my inspiration and I am walking my shoulders up and tall. Damn Priyanka chopra because of you I am loving myself 10 times more. Go girl break the record of whatever we measure confidence in you would win a gold medel. Hoping you would get a sec to go through this message and it’s ok even if you don’t, I am happy that I shared my thoughts some have.
