John Mayer Announces Development of “Walt Grace” Major Motion Picture

John Mayer announced Sunday night that his 2012 song “Walt Grace” was in active development to become a “major motion picture”. Following the performance of the song from his Born and Raised album, Mayer made the announcement and assured the audience that a movie was indeed coming from the “Your Body is a Wonderland” singer.

I want to say one thing that’s going to get me in trouble because that’s what I do. That song (Walt Grace) is soon to be a major motion picture. It’s true. It’s true. It’s going to be a movie.

The announcement came during Rise for the River, a live streamed concert at Pine Creek Lodge in Paradise Valley, MT. Proceeds from the concerts will be donated to a new fund, the Southwest Montana Flood Relief Fund – Serving Park County, which has been created to support communities affected by the severe flooding in Park County. The funding will provide support for immediate needs like emergency shelter, drinking water, food, clothing, food replacement from lost freezers and refrigerators, and will also help with clean-up and rebuilding efforts. Currently, news about the upcoming production is limited to Mayer’s announcement. However, it does follow a previously announced short film based on the same subject matter “Walt Grace Submarine Test, January 1967“. According to the short’s seemingly defunct IMDb page, it was to be done by Emmy® Award-winner Justin Wheelon who is credited as the writer and director. It is unclear if he will be involved in the production of the full length feature film.

The song revolves around a man who’s friends and family don’t believe that he has what it takes to achieve his dreams. But after setting his mind to it, he achieves his goals and people’s perceptions begin to change. The lyrics are deep and there’s a lot to uncover and develop into a full length film.

Lyrics

Walt Grace
Desperately aiding his whole place
Dreamed to discover a new space
And buried himself alive

Inside his basement
Tongue on the side of his face meant
He’s working away on his placement
And what it would take to survive

‘Cause when you’re done with this world

You know the next is up to you

And his wife told his kids he was crazy

And his friends said he’d fail if he’d try

But with the will to work hard

And a library card

He took a homemade, fan-blade

One-man submarine ride

That morning
The sea was mad and I mean it
Waves as big as he’d seen it
Deep in his dreams at home

From dry land
He rolled it over to wet sand
Closed the hatch up with one hand
And peddled off alone

‘Cause when you’re done with this world

You know the next is up to you

And for once in his life it was quiet

As he learned how to turn in the tide

And the sky was a-flare

When he came up for air

In his homemade, fan-blade

One-man submarine ride

One evening
When weeks had passed since he’s leavin’
The call she planned on receivin’
Finally made it home

She accepted
The news she never expected
The operator connected
The call from Tokyo

‘Cause when you’re done with this world

You know the next is up to you

Now his friends bring him up when they’re drinkin’

At the bar with his name on the side

And they smile when they can
As they speak of the man
Who took a homemade, fan-blade
One-man submarine ride
