The first season of “The Heirs of the Dragon” follows the story of old King Jaehaerys I Targaryen as he convenes a Great Council to choose an heir after the death of both his sons. The Westerosi lords ultimately select Jaehaerys’ eldest grandson, Prince Viserys, over Princess Rhaenys, the eldest grandchild.

In the early years of Viserys’ reign, the kingdom is focused on the celebration of Queen Aemma Arryn’s pregnancy, with the king confident that she is carrying his long-awaited male heir. However, the Small Council disregards warnings from Master of Ships Lord Corlys Velaryon about the threat of the Triarchy, an alliance of Essos’ Free Cities, to the Westerosi shipping lanes.

As the story progresses, tensions rise between Viserys and his brother and heir, Prince Daemon, with Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower criticizing Daemon’s brutality as the City Watch commander. This tension comes to a head at a tournament organized by Viserys, where young, common-born knight Ser Criston Cole outcompetes Daemon.

Tragedy strikes when Queen Aemma dies in childbirth and their newborn son, Baelon, also passes away shortly after. Viserys refuses to appoint a new heir, until Ser Otto reveals that Daemon had mockingly styled Baelon as “The Heir for a Day.” Outraged, Viserys banishes Daemon from King’s Landing and appoints his only living child, Princess Rhaenyra, as heir to the Iron Throne.

As the season comes to a close, Rhaenyra faces challenges as she takes on her role as heir, including illegal occupation of Dragonstone by her banished uncle Daemon and threats from the Triarchy. She must also navigate political alliances and her own relationships as she fights to secure her place on the Iron Throne.
