Hi, my name is Regina Tening Chen and I
0:02
played Counselor Kelly in Stranger
0:04
Things season 4.
0:07
You have appeared as a reporter in
0:09
several MCU films and unrelated projects
0:12
like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do
0:14
It. How did you come to be associated
0:16
with that role? Um, I got an audition
0:20
and I did a good job and they booked me.
0:25
That's the most boring answer ever.
0:27
[laughter]
0:28
No, but I uh Oh, as far as the MCU, the
0:30
the thing about MCU films is that they,
0:33
you know, continuity is really big. So,
0:36
it's important even as like a New York
0:39
reporter there, they call me back
0:41
because it makes sense like you would
0:43
see the same people. And I think that's
0:44
just such a like it comes down to even
0:46
like my character that their attention
0:50
to detail they stay consistent with. How
0:52
did your involvement with Stranger
0:53
Things begin and what were those early
0:55
days like? Well, it begun with if we
0:59
really go back is getting to read for
1:02
the role. And it's funny because for
1:03
counselor Kelly, my first version of the
1:06
audition was more of what you would
1:09
think uh a counselor would be like. Uh
1:12
empathetic, softer, kind, caring. Not
1:16
that counselors should not be that way,
1:17
but uh the version that they wanted was
1:21
one that's a little quirkier and
1:22
relatable in like kind of a nutty way.
1:24
So, that was really exciting because
1:26
that's my personality. I was really
1:28
excited to kind of bring more of my
1:30
flavor into the character. And then just
1:32
joining the set was incredible because
1:35
again, talk about MCU's attention to
1:36
detail. Stranger Things is like unreal
1:40
how they built the set. Um, it was at
1:45
the school for my scenes. And even like
1:47
all the extras, they're so excited and
1:49
make everything come to life. There was
1:51
uh in the beginning of the scene, the
1:53
first thing that I'm in, I'm outside
1:55
like directing the kids uh into the gym,
1:58
>> and I needed like three different
2:00
eyelines to kind of help move the scene
2:02
along. And
2:05
I don't know why I did this. I asked who
2:06
wants to be my three eyelines. Everyone
2:10
raised their hands and I'm like, "No,
2:11
now I'm the jerk who has to pick three
2:13
out of like a hundred people." But I I
2:15
was like, "You, you you just stay
2:17
consistent and we'll shoot it." And
2:18
they're like, "Oh." But no, they were
2:19
all really excited. So yeah, it was just
2:22
there wasn't like a what were the early
2:24
days like and what was it later. It was
2:26
all a grand experience. How is being
2:28
involved in Netflix most watched series
2:30
affected your life personally and
2:31
professionally? Well, um
2:36
it's been
2:40
kind of magical uh and
2:45
>> awkward in a way cuz I'm kind of a weird
2:47
I'm kind of nutty. So, how excited
2:51
people get, I'm like, "Oh my god, this
2:52
is like a lot." Um, in an exciting way,
2:54
I'm like,
2:56
I can't believe how much traction uh my
3:00
character has gotten and the amazing fan
3:02
theories, first of all, and everybody be
3:04
asking me what's up. People I know,
3:06
people I don't know, people I stopped
3:08
talking to, I'm I'm kidding. I'm
3:09
kidding. But it's been
3:13
it I was never going to get this. So the
3:16
fact that it's here in my life has been
3:18
such a gift and
3:21
I I'm just so grateful that I have it
3:24
and professionally it's great cuz also
3:26
like just in my career having worked on
3:29
the show productions know people know
3:32
that I can do it and I can do a lot. Not
3:35
everything but a lot. Okay. What was
3:38
your first costume fitting for Stranger
3:40
Things like? Did it immediately lock you
3:42
into the 1980s? Yes.
3:45
I think I had 30 different outfits. It
3:47
was so much fun cuz I was like trying on
3:48
all these things. Some of the outfits
3:50
even look like those cups they used to
3:52
have like the blue purple cups that you
3:54
would find at the mall. Um just the
3:57
coloring, the themes. It was so fun. Um
4:00
and I wish I could have worn more
4:02
outfits, but I'm lucky I even got to do
4:04
two. So it's it was super great. And
4:06
yes, it did lock me into the 1980s
4:07
immediately because got shoulder pads
4:09
and I got like broad shoulders anyway.
4:11
So, I felt like I had a cape sometimes.
4:15
>> Maybe in another spin-off I could be a
4:17
superhero in it.
4:20
>> How did you get into the8s mindset? Did
4:22
you reference any movies, photos, music,
4:24
or realworld details?
4:27
Well, I was kind of around in the '8s
4:30
very briefly, but it wasn't hard to get
4:33
into the mindset when the set is already
4:35
so detailed. It's like I didn't have to
4:37
do any work. I just felt like I was a
4:39
part of it. I think anyone who's a kid
4:41
during that time or not a kid, you just
4:43
kind of drop into it and then go with
4:46
the flow. Hopefully that makes sense. So
4:47
the fact that everything was so 80s, I
4:49
just kind of like went with it. I mean,
4:50
some of it was already familiar, but the
4:53
rest was just the the hair, the outfit,
4:55
all the people,
4:57
it didn't take any work. I didn't have
5:00
to reference anything. I was just jumped
5:04
in and ta I'm here in the 80s. It's like
5:07
magic. Oh, that's all the questions.
5:11
Thank you.
