My name is Chris Rankin and this is my
0:02
five question interview. When signing
0:05
autographs, what quote do fans ask for
0:07
the most? This is a really interesting
0:09
one because it actually changes
0:10
depending on where you are in the world.
0:12
So in Germany, Percy in the German
0:16
language version of Harry Potter says
0:17
Nick. And apparently in Germany that's
0:20
like become quite a kind of like cult
0:22
thing to say like everyone says it means
0:24
basically means no
0:26
dawling I guess or something like that.
0:28
But it it's kind of part of like
0:30
culture. I don't know. Apparently I
0:32
never said it obviously cuz I did it in
0:34
English. But I get Nick B in Germany. Um
0:36
and then Cap Draonus, which is the
0:38
Gryffindor password, is often a very
0:40
popular one as well. Yeah, I'd say
0:42
that's probably the most popular one. Or
0:44
excuse me, I'm head boy. That's the
0:46
other one as well. You were just 16 when
0:48
you landed the role of Percy. What
0:50
stands out most about that audition?
0:53
Uh good. Oh, that's a good one. So I'd
0:55
say what stands out most is that it was
0:59
alarmingly easy considering that it's
1:02
was such it ended up being such a big
1:04
part of my life and such a sort of
1:06
important film series in the world I
1:08
guess. Um I had two auditions for
1:10
Potter. I had one audition with Janet
1:12
Hersensen who was the casting director
1:14
that lasted 10 minutes I guess. I just
1:17
had to walk up and down this room and do
1:20
the scene where Percy takes the
1:21
Gryffindors to the common room for the
1:23
first time and it's all the you know
1:24
keeping on the staircases and capraonus
1:27
and all of that. Um, and that seemed to
1:30
go well. So, they made me then she asked
1:31
me to come back like three days later
1:34
and meet Chris Columbus and David Haymon
1:37
and I did the same audition for them and
1:39
it was maybe 20 minutes long. I had to
1:41
do it like two more times in that
1:44
audition. And like the next day they
1:46
said, "You've got the part." And I was
1:47
like, "What? That's like the easiest
1:48
audition I've ever had for anything."
1:50
And it was Harry Potter. Like I've done
1:53
plays that nobody came to see where I've
1:55
had longer and harder auditions. was
1:57
nuts. But yeah, it was easy. That's what
1:59
stands out about it most is how easy it
2:01
was. Maybe I was just Maybe I just was
2:03
Percy Weasley. Maybe that's typ casting
2:05
again. What was it like being on set of
2:07
a Harry Potter film? Well,
2:10
it was always really cool. Like we had
2:12
all these amazing places you can go and
2:15
see now at the Warner Brothers Studio
2:17
Tour. I get the plug right in there. Um
2:20
but it was it was amazing because the
2:21
the amount of detail that goes into each
2:23
one of those sets was incredible. like
2:25
the Weasley's house, the burrow when we
2:27
were filming in there for Chamber of
2:28
Secrets. Like you could open the kitchen
2:30
drawers and there would be cutlery and
2:33
knives and forks and spoons and things
2:34
and like little pictures that apparently
2:37
the kids have drawn when they were
2:38
babies and stuff and nobody ever sees
2:40
any of that. Like nobody opens a drawer
2:42
in the films, but it's just it's there
2:44
just in case. It all adds to it, which I
2:46
think is um
2:47
yeah, that's that's kind of what makes
2:48
it really special. So, I think that's
2:50
what I really enjoyed was all these
2:51
little hidden secret bits and also just
2:54
hanging out with people really. I mean,
2:56
like in the great hall, we spent a lot
2:58
of time in that great hall, but we were
3:01
all together, so it was really it was
3:03
awesome, you know, and we're there. If
3:05
you're filming a feast scene, it would
3:06
take like maybe two or 3 weeks. So, it
3:08
was it's quite an intense thing. Yeah.
3:11
You shared the screen with some
3:13
incredible actors we've since lost. Um,
3:15
do any particular memories stand out
3:17
from working with them? Um
3:19
yeah,
3:20
I mean we have we've lost loads like
3:22
Richard Harris, Gambon, Robbie Col
3:24
Train, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith. uh so
3:28
many of them have have passed on now
3:30
which is really sad but equally you know
3:34
that is the passing of time but it was
3:36
all I mean I didn't get to work with
3:38
Alan Rickman particularly but it was
3:40
always incredible just being on set and
3:42
like watching him from a distance kind
3:43
of go Alan Rickman that's the sheriff of
3:45
Nottingham that's Hans Kruber um and
3:49
honestly I think we were all a little
3:50
bit scared of Allan cuz when he was in
3:52
that Snape when he was in that Snape
3:54
costume that didn't happen Um, when he
3:57
was in that Snape costume, he was kind
3:59
of slightly terrifying. Um, Maggie Smith
4:04
had the driest sense of humor I've ever
4:07
come across, and I was never entirely
4:08
sure whether she was just being funny or
4:10
genuinely hated me, but I think she was
4:12
just being funny. Like I remember we did
4:14
a scene that was cut, but it is on the
4:17
it's on the Aszkaban DVD I think where
4:20
we're in the Gryffindor common room and
4:23
uh we're talking to Sir Kadugan, the
4:25
portrait of the um of the night and
4:30
um there's a bit where it's me and
4:32
Maggie in a closeup together and I
4:35
remember when we were rehearsing it, she
4:36
was like, "You're standing in my light."
4:38
And I thought I genuinely thought the
4:40
world was going to end. Um, but then you
4:42
could just see that little twinkle in
4:43
the corner of her eye. And yeah, uh, I
4:45
also I worked with her a little bit. I
4:47
worked on Downtown Abbey in when I was
4:49
working in TV production later on. And
4:51
it was really nice to go back and and
4:53
work again with her and with her double,
4:55
her her body double, Ros, who was with
4:57
her on the first Harry Potter film,
4:59
still with her,
5:00
gosh, 15, 16 years later. So, yeah, it
5:03
was that was fun. That was good fun.
5:05
What do you remember about working with
5:07
Daniel, Emma, and Robert on the Harry
5:08
Potter set? Ah,
5:12
when we were younger, so on the first
5:15
movie, it was funny because Robert was a
5:19
constant giggler. Like that boy would
5:22
giggle at absolutely anything. So by
5:24
like the end of the day when everyone
5:26
was getting a bit tired and we'd been
5:28
working for, you know, five or six hours
5:30
and they were young kids. They were 10,
5:32
11 years old and they'd have to do 4
5:34
hours of schooling every day and film
5:36
these huge movies. You know, when you
5:39
get a bit tired and a bit silly. Robert
5:41
was a real giggler. Dan
5:44
um Dan is like the most brainy,
5:47
knowledgeable person on all the most
5:49
random stuff ever. And you could have
5:51
like even when he was 11, 12 years old,
5:53
you could have these really weirdly
5:55
indepth conversations about very niche
5:57
things with him. Um, and then Emma was
6:01
Hermione Granger. Emma just was Hermione
6:02
Granger, actually. Um, but me and Emma
6:06
arrived to the studio for our first day
6:09
ever together. So, the car that picked
6:12
me up had already picked her up. So, we
6:13
walked in to that first ever day, which
6:15
was the table read for the first movie.
6:17
We walked in together. So, yeah,
6:20
she's always been She's always She was
6:21
always a Miley. Always was, always will
6:23
be. Yeah, that was question five. And
6:26
then you can find me on well this
6:28
weekend you can find me in Corpus
6:30
Christi cuz that's where we are at
6:31
Corpus Christi Comic-Con right now here
6:34
till Sunday. Um and then you can find me
6:37
on social media. If it says Chris Rankin
6:39
and it's got a blue tick next to it,
6:40
it's almost certainly me. Uh it's
6:42
cwrankin on Instagram. Uh
6:44
facebook.com/chris
6:46
rankin I think. Um and then chris
6:49
rankin.co.uk
6:51
for the website.
6:53
Thanks.
