Synopsis
Shira, an intelligent, solitary middle-aged woman, has always put herself in the background to support the careers of men. She reluctantly agrees to take in Jurek, the immigrant grandson of the Polish family who saved her father and aunt during the war. Surprisingly, these two lonely people, far apart in age, recognize in each other something beyond what they present to the world. But the young man has secrets – since his arrival in the US he has become involved in a sex trafficking ring. When assigned to escort a mother and her small child, he balks, horrified, and brings them instead to Shira’s home. It falls to Shira to extricate all three from the clutches of the deadly criminals. She finds in herself the strength and self-possession to send Jurek to safety, and to help the immigrant mother and child, paying forward the life-saving kindness that was done her family long ago. Shira takes the credit and position in her work to which she has long been entitled, and finally opens her life to the possibility of meaningful connection.
