ATM Boy: The True Story of Dan Saunders and the $1.6 Million ATM Glitch
“ATM Boy,” produced by GRITTY FILM PRODUCTIONS and GLITCHYCARD LLC, is a feature film that chronicles the astonishing true story of Dan Saunders, an Australian bartender who, in 2011, discovered a loophole in the National Australia Bank’s ATM system. This glitch allowed him to withdraw substantial amounts of money beyond his actual account balance during specific hours when the ATM was offline. Over a period of four and a half months, Saunders exploited this flaw to withdraw approximately $1.6 million, which he spent on a lavish lifestyle, including high-end restaurants, private jets, and extravagant parties.
The film delves into Saunders’ rapid transition from financial instability to sudden wealth, exploring the ethical dilemmas and personal consequences of his actions. It portrays his initial thrill and subsequent realization of the gravity of his deeds, culminating in his eventual decision to confess, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. “ATM Boy” serves as a compelling narrative on the allure of easy money, the moral complexities of exploiting systemic flaws, and the inevitable repercussions of such choices.
Directed by Stefan Avalos, known for his work on “Strad Style,” and produced by Ted Collins, the film features Vernon Wells, recognized for his roles in “Mad Max 2” and “Commando.” Currently in pre-production, “ATM Boy” is slated for release in May 2025. The production team has engaged in crowdfunding efforts to support the film’s development, indicating a collaborative approach to bringing this remarkable story to the screen.
