Synopsis:
The story follows Sherman McCoy, a self-important Wall Street bond trader who sees himself as a “master of the universe.” His privileged life unravels after a wrong turn in the Bronx leads to a hit-and-run accident involving a young Black man. As the incident becomes a media sensation, Sherman is thrust into a storm of public outrage, political opportunism, and legal peril. A cast of opportunists—including an ambitious district attorney, a sensationalist journalist, and a struggling British reporter—circle the case, each exploiting it for personal gain. As reputations crumble and truth becomes secondary to headlines, the novel exposes the moral emptiness and social tensions simmering beneath the surface of high society.
