Interview with Madison Taylor Baez
1. Playing Young Selena in Selena: The Series introduced you
to a wider audience. What was the audition process like, and how did
you feel when you found out you got the role?
The audition process was long, lasting about maybe 3 months, but very
worth it in the end. I found out I booked it during my soccer
practice!
2. You’ve mentioned that your parents were fans of Selena’s music
before you took on this role. How did you prepare to portray such an
iconic figure, and what aspects of Selena’s personality did you
connect with the most?
I did my research about her, but I tried not to watch the movie made
to bring as much of myself as I could to the role. I connected with
her relationship with her Dad the most.
3. You performed many of Selena’s songs in the series. How did it feel
to sing her music, and did you have a favorite song or performance
from the show?
It felt inspiring to sing her music, to be able to share her message
with the world. My favorite song of hers is Como la Flor.
4. This was a family-centered series, showing Selena’s early years
with her father’s band. Did you relate to this experience with your
own family’s support of your music career?
I related to practicing in the garage with my Dad and had continuous
support from my family.
5. You have experience performing in front of large crowds at sporting
events. How does performing the national anthem in a stadium compare
to acting on set, and do you have a favorite performance moment?
I feel like performing the anthem is a little easier to me because I
have more experience. My favorite performance was the Dodger Games.
6. Music has been a big part of your life, especially as you supported
your father through his battle with cancer by singing to him. How has
your family’s journey influenced your approach to music and acting?
My family’s journey and hardships are my motivation to continue
singing and acting.
7. Selena: The Series included many opportunities to work
closely with actors playing your family members. What was it like
collaborating with them, and did you learn anything from your
co-stars, like Ricardo Chavira?
It was like a second family to me on set. I learned to treat everyone
with respect and to focus on the positive sides of things.
8. Outside of your work on Selena, you’ve starred in
commercials and short films. How has this broader experience helped
you grow as a performer, and do you have other acting roles you’d like
to pursue in the future?
It has helped me gain experience and confidence. I would like to play
action-related/drama roles.
9. You’ve expressed a passion for charity work, especially related to
cancer awareness. How has this shaped you as an artist, and do you
hope to continue using your platform to support causes close to your
heart?
It has allowed me to give back to my community and stay humble. Yes.
