In 1982 Chicago, Mayor Jane Byrne governs at the behest of the entrenched political Machine, alienating Black communities by firing key leaders and silencing public input. In response, Jesse Jackson organizes a boycott of Chicago Fest, exposing Byrne’s vulnerability. Sensing opportunity, journalist Lu Palmer and a determined group of activists urge Congressman Harold Washington to run for mayor. Initially resistant, Harold agrees only if they can mobilize massive grassroots support—raising funds and registering tens of thousands of new voters. As the campaign unfolds, Harold’s message energizes a diverse coalition, even as opponents exploit racial divisions and political sabotage. He overcomes a contentious primary and defeats Republican Bernie Epton in a bitter general election. As mayor, Harold faces fierce opposition from a rebellious city council bent on limiting his power. Through court battles and strategic elections, he gradually regains control. Reelected with unexpected backing, Harold’s reform movement gains traction—until his sudden death ends a transformative chapter in Chicago history.
