Netflix’s Bioshock Film Adaptation [All we Know so Far]

Production Update

Bioshock is set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told—all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation.

Netflix will work with Take-Two Interactive and 2K Games to produce a live-action film adaptation of the popular video game franchise which is just one of many recent productions based on video games. This will be the second go-around for 2K Games as they try to bring the franchise to the big screen. Back in the late-2000’s director Gore Verbinski was attached to a project with Universal, but concerns over budget and an R-rating ultimately spelled the end for the project.

While dreams for a Bioshock film have been reincarnated, firm details haven’t been released following Netflix’s initial announcement. However, based on the image used, we can safely assume that the recently announced Bioshock movie will be based on the events of the first game which was set in the dystopian underwater city of Rapture. While it’s hard to say when audiences can expect the series to be released as it’s still in active development, Netflix may want to tie in themes from the 2k Games’ upcoming Bioshock 4.

“Bioshock” Cast and Crew

Producers Roy Lee and Doug Davison have been tapped to head development of the new Bioshock film. Davison is known for Chaos Walking (2021), Oldboy (2013), Abduction (2011). Meanwhile Roy Lee will be simultaneously working on Bioshock and another video game property—Vertigo Entertainment’s new Minecraft movie.
