About Stephanie Beatriz

Stephanie Beatriz Bischoff Alvizuri, known professionally as Stephanie Beatriz, was born on February 10, 1981, in Neuquén, Argentina. She is an accomplished American actress, best recognized for her portrayal of Detective Rosa Diaz in the Fox/NBC comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” from 2013 to 2021. Additionally, she voiced the protagonist Mirabel Madrigal in the acclaimed Disney film “Encanto.”

Beatriz’s early life traces back to her birth in Neuquén, Argentina, to a Colombian father and a Bolivian mother. At the age of two, she migrated to the United States with her family, which included a younger sister. The family settled in Webster, Texas, near Houston, where Beatriz attended Clear Brook High School. Her passion for the arts was nurtured from a young age, with her mother often taking her and her sister to arts exhibits and events. This exposure played a pivotal role in shaping her interest in acting, which was further solidified when she took speech and debate as an elective in school, allowing her to participate in plays.

After completing her schooling, Beatriz pursued higher education at the all-women’s Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She graduated in 2002 and subsequently moved to New York City to chase her acting dreams. By 2010, she had relocated to Los Angeles.

Throughout her career, Beatriz has taken on various roles in both television and film. She had minor roles in TV series like “The Closer” and “Southland” and a recurring role as Gloria’s sister Sonia in the ABC comedy series “Modern Family.” Her directorial skills were showcased in the season 6 episode “He Said, She Said” of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” In the film domain, she starred as Bonnie in the independent feature “The Light of the Moon,” which premiered at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Competition. Her performance in the film was highly praised by critics.

Beatriz’s voice acting talents were also highlighted when she voiced the character Gina Cazador on “BoJack Horseman.” In 2019, it was announced that she would be part of the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical “In the Heights.” Another significant collaboration with Miranda was her role as Mirabel Madrigal in the Disney animated film “Encanto.”

On a personal note, Beatriz has been open about her challenges, including severe astigmatism and disordered eating, which she developed during college. She realized her bisexuality around the age of 12 or 13 and officially came out to the public in June 2016. In October 2017, she announced her engagement to actor Brad Hoss, and the couple tied the knot on October 6, 2018. They welcomed their daughter in August 2021.

Beatriz’s journey from her early days in Argentina to her success in Hollywood is a testament to her talent, determination, and passion for the arts.
